The Wrangler NFR consists of 10 rounds on 10 consecutive days. Cowboys and barrel racers earn money by placing first through sixth in any round, and pick up more money by placing first through eighth in the average (cumulative times or points earned during the 10 rounds). At the end of each Wrangler NFR, there are two champions in each event (four for team roping): the average winner, who won the Wrangler NFR by having the best cumulative time or score in his or her event over the 10 rounds, and the world champion, who finished the year with the most money (including what he or she earned at the Wrangler NFR). For each event, the average winner and world champion may be the same person or different people.

An event like no other, the Wrangler NFR is an extravaganza for fans to enjoy the roping and riding activity of today’s cowboys. It is the culmination of the rodeo season where the top 15 contestants in bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing and bull riding compete to take home top honors and their share of a share of $10 million purse.

History of the National Finals Rodeo

The first National Finals Rodeo was held in Dallas, Texas in 1959. Since then the rodeo has been held in Los Angeles, Oklahoma City, and finally at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada where it has been held every year since 1984. During the National Finals Rodeo, cowboys compete in bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing, and bull riding. Cowboys accumulate points throughout the year as well as during the 10 day finals and the highest earning cowboy is given the title of World All-Around Rodeo Champion. The National Finals Rodeo is organized by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.

History of the Thomas & Mack Center

The Thomas & Mack Center was opened on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 1983. The official opening date was December 16th, 1983 and was celebrated with a gala featuring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Diana Ross. The Thomas & Mack center has held a wide variety events from being the home court of UNLV basketball to hosting Budweiser World Cup Horse Jumping. The 19,000 seat arena hosted the 2007 NBA All-Star Game, has hosted the US Olympic Volleyball team, and hosted the highest grossing boxing match to date when Evander Holyfield fought Lennox Lewis in 1999.
